3岁开始弹钢琴，1年之内，他的妈妈就听见他仅靠听收音机，就能弹出Winifred Atwell的溜冰华尔兹。约翰很快就在家庭聚会和派对中表演，7岁开始正式上钢琴课。
11岁的时候，他得了皇家艺术学院颁发的音乐少年奖学金。他当年的老师后来告诉传媒，长达4页的一段亨德尔约翰只是听了一遍，然后马上就弹了出来，就像唱片一样准确无误。
17岁，还没拿到普通高中文凭，就去搞他的音乐去了，正如他所说的，只对生命中的艺术那一面感兴趣。
